New Features

📸 Receipt Scanning

Quickly capture expense amounts by scanning receipts with your camera:

  • When adding an expense, tap the camera icon next to the amount field
  • Point your camera at the receipt total
  • Tap on the amount you want to capture
  • The amount is automatically filled into the expense

Note: Receipt scanning requires camera permission. Works best with clear, well-lit receipts. The scanner detects currency amounts in multiple formats (€, $, £, ¥, etc.).

📍 Smart Location Features

DivvyTrip can automatically suggest expense details based on your location:

  • Auto-fill expense title: When adding an expense, the app detects nearby businesses and suggests their name as the title
  • Smart categorization: Automatically selects the expense category based on the business type (Restaurant → Food, Gas Station → Transportation, etc.)
  • City fallback: If no business is nearby, the title is set to "Expense in [City Name]"

Enable in Settings: Go to Settings → Preferences → Toggle "Use Location". You'll also need to grant location permission when prompted.

Privacy: Location data is only used temporarily to detect nearby places and is never stored or transmitted. See our Privacy Policy for details.

🎤 Siri Integration

Add expenses hands-free using Siri voice commands:

  • Say "Hey Siri, add an expense to DivvyTrip"
  • Siri will ask for the expense title and amount
  • The expense is automatically added to your most recently viewed trip
  • Default settings: You pay, equal split among all participants, category detected from title keywords

Supported languages: Works in any language iOS supports. The app automatically detects keywords in your language (e.g., "gasolina" → Transportation in Spanish).

Tip: Open a trip before using Siri to ensure the expense is added to the right trip. You can also find DivvyTrip shortcuts in the Shortcuts app.

🏷️ Custom Categories

Create your own expense categories tailored to your trip:

  • Go to Settings → Categories to manage your custom categories
  • Create categories with personalized names and icons (40+ icons available)
  • Your categories are automatically available to all participants in trips you create
  • Category names can be in any language you prefer

Examples: Create categories like "Souvenirs", "Tips", "Boat Rentals", "Spa Day", or "Street Food" to organize expenses exactly how you want.

Note: Custom categories you create are visible to all participants when adding expenses to trips you own. The built-in categories (Food, Transportation, etc.) are always available.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does DivvyTrip cost?

DivvyTrip is a one-time purchase of $2.99 USD. This gives you full access to all features with no subscriptions, ads, or additional in-app purchases. All future updates are included with your purchase.

Are there any recurring fees or subscriptions?

No! DivvyTrip is a one-time purchase with no recurring fees, subscriptions, or hidden costs. Pay once and enjoy all features forever.

Why do I need to sign up?

DivvyTrip requires an account for several important reasons:

  • Sync across devices: Access your trips from any device by signing in with your account
  • Share trips with others: Invite friends and family to collaborate on shared trips
  • Secure your data: Your trip data is protected and backed up in the cloud
  • Link to existing trips: When someone adds you to a trip using your email, you'll automatically see it after verifying your account
  • Prevent data loss: If you lose your device, your trips are safely stored in your account

Your email is only used for authentication and linking you to trips. We take your privacy seriously and never share your information with third parties.

How do I sign in?

DivvyTrip offers multiple secure sign-in options:

  • Sign in with Apple: Quick and secure sign-in using your Apple ID. You can choose to share or hide your email address.
  • Sign in with Google: Use your Google account to sign in instantly.
  • Email and Password: Create an account with your email address and a secure password. You'll need to verify your email before using the app.

Should I share or hide my email with Sign in with Apple?

When using Sign in with Apple, you can choose to "Share My Email" or "Hide My Email":

  • Share My Email (Recommended): Uses your real email address. This makes it easier for friends to add you to trips and send invitations. Choose this option if you trust DivvyTrip with your email.
  • Hide My Email: Creates a private relay email address (like abc123@privaterelay.appleid.com). This protects your privacy but makes it harder for friends to add you to trips since they'll need to know your relay address.

Tip: If you use Hide My Email, share your private relay address with friends who want to add you to trips. You can find it in Settings → Your Name → iCloud → Hide My Email.

Can I change my display name?

Yes! You can update your display name at any time:

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap the pencil icon next to your name
  • Enter your new display name and tap "Save"

Your display name is how you appear to other users in trips. Changes are instantly reflected across all your trips. This is especially useful if you signed in with Apple and want to use a different name than what Apple provides.

How do I create a trip?

Tap the "+" button on the home screen, enter your trip name, destination, dates, and select your currency. That's it! When you create a trip, you're automatically added as the first participant and marked as the trip owner.

What do the badges on trips mean?

On your trips list, you'll see badges indicating trip ownership:

  • ⭐ You (green badge): Trips you created and own. Only trip owners can delete trips.
  • Owner's Name (gray badge): Shows who created and owns the trip when you're a participant.
  • Trip Owner (hidden) (gray badge): The trip owner isn't a participant (rare, usually from imports).

Can I delete a trip someone else created?

No, only the trip creator can delete a trip. This security feature prevents accidental deletion by other participants. If you see the "⭐ You" badge on a trip, you can swipe left to delete it (with confirmation). When a trip owner deletes a trip, it's removed for all participants.

How do I add friends to a trip?

Open your trip, go to the Friends tab, tap the "+" button, and enter their email address and name. You can then send them an invitation. In the Friends tab, you'll see badges showing who's registered ("You" for yourself, "App User" for others) and who hasn't joined yet ("Not yet registered").

I can't see contacts or email addresses when adding from Contacts

If you see "No contacts with email addresses" when trying to add from your contacts, you may need to grant Full Access to your contacts:

  • Open SettingsAppsDivvyTrip
  • Tap Contacts
  • Select Full Access instead of "Limited Access"

Note: "Limited Access" (where you select specific contacts) may not expose email addresses to the app, even if those contacts have emails. Choose "Full Access" to see all contacts with email addresses. DivvyTrip only reads names and email addresses from your contacts and never modifies or shares your contact information.

Why do I need to verify my email?

Note: Email verification is only required when signing up with email and password. If you sign in with Apple or Google, verification is handled automatically by those services.

For email/password accounts, verification ensures that you own the email address you signed up with. This prevents others from claiming trips associated with your email and protects your privacy. After signing up, check your inbox for a verification link. Click it, then return to the app and tap "I've Verified My Email" to gain full access.

I didn't receive a verification email

Note: This only applies to email/password accounts. Apple and Google sign-ins don't require email verification.

Check your spam/junk folder. If you still don't see it, tap "Resend Verification Email" on the verification screen. The email comes from support@divvytrip.com. You can also sign out and sign in again to trigger a new verification check.

Can I use the app without verifying my email?

If you sign up with email and password, you must verify your email to use the app. This security measure prevents users from impersonating others and ensures that only you can access trips associated with your email address. If you sign in with Apple or Google, you can use the app immediately—no email verification needed.

How does currency conversion work?

When you add an expense in a different currency than your trip's currency, DivvyTrip automatically converts it using real-time exchange rates. The original amount and conversion rate are saved for reference.

Can I use DivvyTrip offline?

Yes! DivvyTrip has full offline support.

You can:

  • Create and edit trips
  • Add expenses
  • View all your trip data
  • Everything syncs automatically when you reconnect to the internet

When you're offline, you'll see an orange banner at the top of the screen. All changes are saved locally and will sync when you're back online. Currency exchange rates are cached for 24 hours so you can still add expenses in different currencies.

What happens if I create an expense while offline?

Your expense is saved locally on your device and will automatically sync to all trip participants when you reconnect to the internet. You'll see a brief "Syncing..." message when the connection is restored. The app uses Firebase's offline persistence, so your data is safe even if you close the app while offline.

How do I split an expense?

When adding an expense, select who should split the cost. By default, expenses are split equally among selected participants.

Custom Splits: For situations where costs aren't equal (like when one person orders a salad while others order steaks), toggle "Custom Split" to enter individual amounts for each person. Use the magic wand (✨) button next to any amount to automatically distribute the remaining balance equally among the other participants. The app validates that amounts add up to the total before allowing you to save.

What does the Settle tab show?

The Settle tab shows smart settlement suggestions that minimize the number of transactions needed. It tells you exactly who owes whom and how much.

My friend didn't receive an invitation email

Make sure they check their spam folder. If using the email invitation feature, ensure they have Mail configured on their device. They can also sign up directly with the email address you invited.

How do I edit or delete an expense?

In the Expenses tab, tap on an expense to edit it, or swipe left to delete it.

Can I use custom exchange rates?

Yes! When adding an expense in a different currency, you can toggle "Use custom exchange rate" and enter your own rate.

How do I mark a settlement as paid?

In the Settle tab, tap "Mark as Paid" on any settlement once the payment has been completed.

Can I export trip data?

Yes! You have three export options:

  • Export Single Trip (CSV): Open any trip → Tap the menu (•••) in the top left → Select "Export as CSV". The file will be named after your trip (e.g., "Europe Trip.csv") and can be saved, emailed, or shared. This format can be imported back into DivvyTrip or opened in spreadsheet apps.
  • Export All My Trips (ZIP): Go to Settings → Data Export → Tap "Export All My Trips". This creates a ZIP file containing CSV exports of all trips you created. You can choose where to save it on your device (iCloud Drive, Files app, etc.). This is perfect for backing up all your trip data at once.
  • Email Summary: From the Settle tab, tap "Email Trip Summary" to send a complete breakdown of all expenses and settlements to yourself or all participants.

Note: The "Export All My Trips" feature only includes trips that you created, not trips where you're just a participant. Each trip is exported as a separate CSV file inside the ZIP archive.

Can I import trips from the old PayBack app?

Yes! DivvyTrip can import trip data from PayBack CSV exports. On the Trips screen, tap the "Import" button and select your CSV file. The app will automatically:

  • Detect the currency from the first expense amount (supports €, $, £, ¥, ฿, and more)
  • Create a trip with all expenses, dates, and participant splits preserved
  • Handle the optional "Converted Amount" column if present
  • Exclude participants with $0.00 amounts from individual expenses
  • Skip exchange rate conversion lines at the end of the CSV

Important Limitation: PayBack allowed multiple currencies for expenses within a single trip. DivvyTrip currently imports all expenses using the currency detected from the first expense. After importing, please review your expenses and manually correct any that were originally in a different currency.

What CSV format is required for importing?

The CSV should have columns in this order:

  • Date (M/d/yy format, e.g., 2/18/08)
  • Description (expense name)
  • Payer (who paid for the expense)
  • Amount (with currency symbol like €100.00 or $50.00)
  • Converted Amount (optional - will be automatically detected and skipped)
  • Participant columns (one column per person showing their share)

The currency is automatically detected from the first expense's amount field. Use $0.00 (or €0.00, etc.) to indicate a participant wasn't included in that expense. Lines at the end of the file containing only conversion rates will be automatically ignored.

Is my data private?

Yes. Only trip participants can see trip expenses. We never share or sell your data. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Can I change how trips and expenses are sorted?

Yes! You can customize the sort order for trips and expenses throughout the app:

  • Go to SettingsPreferences
  • Select Sort Order
  • Choose Newest First (default) or Oldest First

This preference applies to both your trips list and all expense lists. Changes take effect immediately throughout the app. Your preference is saved on your device.

How do I delete my account?

You can permanently delete your account at any time. Go to Settings → Scroll to the bottom → Tap "Delete Account". This will permanently delete all your personal data, trips you created, expenses, and settlements. This action cannot be undone.

Before deleting: Export your trip data to keep a record. Open each trip → Tap the menu (•••) → "Export as CSV" to save your expense history.

What happens when I delete my account?

When you delete your account, all data associated with you is immediately and permanently removed, including: your user profile, all trips you created (and their expenses/settlements), and your authentication credentials. If you created trips with other participants, those trips will be deleted for everyone. This action is immediate and cannot be reversed.
